Generative AI is disrupting the business models of several firms operating in digital and non-digital markets. The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 has caused a competitive race among Big Techs, eager to upgrade existing virtual assistants and willing to launch new products in the market to satisfy a growing demand for AI tools.

A key question analysed by the CDS team is whether and to what extent the AI revolution will disrupt specific industries, such as the creative industries (e.g. music, media), and will require policy adaptation, especially as regards the design of copyright protection.

A second research topic is the exploration of regulatory challenges ahead of the AI revolution. Another important topic is to evaluate whether and to what extent Generative AI will favour the replication of market dominance of big techs and foster anti-competitive practices. If so, how can competition and regulatory authorities timely identify and contrast such conduct?

Finally, the issue of the possible standardisation of AI systems, globally or regionally, especially after the approval of the EU AI Act, is also emerging as a key research theme.
